Lionel messi breaks la liga record after trashing athletico madrid

Lionel Messi has set a new La Liga record after spearheading Barcelona’s defeat of Atletico Madrid defeat on Saturday, April 6, at Nou Camp. According to Goal.com, the performance of the Argentine playmaker, who also doubles as captain ensured Iker Casillas’s previous record as La Liga star with most wins will no longer count. However, the victory was a tough one for the Catalans as Atletico Madrid were difficult to break down, despite losing Diego Costa early in the contest due to a straight red card for foul language.

The victory means Messi has a total of 335 wins in the Spanish Premiera division, a number higher than any other player in the record books of the Spanish topflight. Previously, Iker Casillas, was on top of the most wins after claiming 334 victories during his days for Real Madrid. Interestingly, while Casillas' needed 510 matches to achieve the feat, Messi reached the landmark in 447 games - meaning his total winning rate is a little under 75 per cent when playing for Barcelona.
