NANS Condemns Owo Killings, Says Assailants Must Not Go Scot-free

The leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned it, in totality, the early hours attack and heinous killings of over fifty (50) Christian worshippers in St. Francis Catholic Church in Owa-luwa Street, Owo town, Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The Students’ body charged the Federal Government of Nigeria under the leadership of President Muhammad Buhari GCFR and the Ondo State Government under the watch of Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu to nib the rising insecurity in the Owo town in bud and to ensure that the perpetrators of the massacre are brought to book.

The Executive Director, Campus Intervention NANS National Secretariat, Comrade Oladimeji Uthman made this call, in a statement made available today to newsmen in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

It would be recalled that that some gunmen on the early hours of Sunday invaded the church during her Pentecost Sunday when every Catholic is expected to be in Church to commemorate the Solemnity. It is so sad to say that while the Holy Mass was going on, some unknown Gunmen attacked and opened fire on members of the church, leaving many feared dead and scores of others injured.

Comrade Uthman in the statement expressed sadness over the attack, describing it as inhumane, sardonic, satanic and pathetic.

He stressed, “the invasion and killings of worshippers in Owo town of Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State is so disheartening as this is a local government that houses one of the state-owned tertiary institution, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo.”

The Executive Director described the brutal murder as a pathetic one while he calls on all National Security Agencies to ensure that the assailants didn’t go scot-free and they are brought to book in order to serve as deterrent to others.

Oladimeji Uthman further maintained that,” it is high time the Federal Government and Ondo State Government led by Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu and President Muhammadu Buhari rise up to this insecurity challenge. It is sad and inhumane waking up to such heart wrecking news as this is an unexpected development.

“The perpetrators of Owo massacre must not go unpunished. The Ondo State Governor must use every available resources within the coffers of the law to hunt down, arrest, prosecute the perpetrators and make them pay for what they have committed”.

“On behalf of the leadership of the students body, I condemn in totality this satanic activitiy as this unfortunate incident is highly condemnable and poses a serious threat to our collective existence as a people.

The various heads of security agencies should as a matter of urgency deploy their men to the community to monitor and restore normalcy as the lifes of our students studying in Owo town is so precious to us as a leadership.

“While calling for calm, I join all well-meaning Nigerian Students in the Sunshine State to be law abiding, vigilant and not to take laws into their hands.

“I also commiserate with families of those who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate attack and bring succor to the wounded. I share in the grief of the Olowo of Owo, Oba Gbadegesin Ogunoye as well as the Catholic Church, he concluded.
