DECAYING EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES IN OGUN: ENI MO’YI WURA L’ANTA FUN

The social media space in the past few days has been agog with images of different schools in Ogun State where students were sitting on the floor to write exams. The images which has generated public outburst on the underperformance of Prince Dapo Abiodun as Ogun State Governor was part of the top discussion among social media users especially in Ogun State.

When I saw the images and the preceding reactions, the popular Yoruba adage of “eni mo’yi wura l’anta fun” , which literally means gold is sold to one who values it, struck my mind and I am propelled to write this piece.

Oftentimes when I tried to criticize political office holders, I do that within the ambit of their manifesto and antecedents before assumption of office and it judging with this yardsticks, it will be just to say that Prince Dapo Abiodun may not offer more than he has done in repositioning or perhaps I should say in retrogressing the education sector in Ogun State.

Emerging as a candidate with controversial degree whose tertiary education and degree cannot be ascertained and with no clear manifesto on what and how he will developed the state order than the “Building Our Future Together” agenda, one may be forced to assume that Dapo Abiodun can only give what he has.

As 2023 draws near and the race of who will occupy the exalted seat at Oke-Mosan, electorate must be critical of who they will elect into the number one seat of Ogun State especially if we are concerned about repositioning the education sector of our dear state.

Of the two leading contenders for the governorship seat, incumbent Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressive Congress and Ladi Adetutu of the Peoples Democratic Party, one has a family background of a retired teacher as father while the other has a family history of contributing to educational development in the state with construction of infrastructures in almost all tertiary institutions in Ogun State.

The Adebutus’ exploit in developing education in Ogun state cannot be overemphasized. There is hardly any tertiary institutions in the state that there is no structure donated by the business mogul, Kensington Adebutu. The same is the gesture of the Adebutus in sport and other area of social responsibility.

The Adebutus have proven their passion for education and human capital development with their business spread across the state. They have proven to know the value of gold and therefore it should be sold to them.
