HUMANITARIANISM: ANOTHER SIDE TO BARR. SEUN ASHAMU’S COIN By Akinloluwa Akinbode

Humanitarianism, as a philosophy centres on promoting the well-being, dignity and standard of living of all humans. This involves actions and efforts channeled or aimed at alleviating poverty, improving living conditions, and advocating for human rights in the face of crises, conflicts, or other challenges.

According to Kofi Annan, “The heart of humanitarianism beats in the rhythm of empathy, understanding, and the relentless pursuit of a better world for all.”

In the bustling realm of excellent nature of governance and administration in Oyo State, Barrister Seun Ashamu shines with his exceptional landmark strides as a public servant and presents himself as a beacon of hope and transformation, whose commitment to duty goes beyond the conventional expectations.

As the Commissioner for Energy, his tenure has not just been marked by an unprecedented administrative prowess being felt, and attracting attention locally and internationally, but also by a profound humanitarian spirit that has significantly impacted the lives of the people he serves through the template of the state government under the leadership of His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde. The state government’s dedication to social responsibility, well being of the state’s workforce and community welfare has set the government of the day apart and distinguished them among equals, earning Oyo state accolades for positive change and impacts.

Through innovative programmes and collaborations, Barrister Ashamu has opened opportunities for young graduates and professionals in all fields, empowering them to contribute meaningfully to the state's development and private institutions. Over the past four years, not less than 135 job opportunities have been facilitated by Barrister Ashamu as his own little way of addressing the pervasive issue of unemployment, particularly among youths in the state and the country as a whole. He has spearheaded initiatives that create job opportunities within the energy and mineral resources sector within and outside the state, which includes: Shell Nigeria Gas, LEDCO and so on.

However, his humanitarian nature and genuine commitment to improving the quality of life for those in need is most evident in him being a helping hand to the underprivileged and vulnerable in the society, uplifting families facing economic hardships through provision of essential resources and support for skills development programmes. He ensures that his contribution go beyond immediate relief, but rather, fostering long-term empowerment for the recipients. Among such initiatives are, Mammas Training, Protogy Meter Installation, Renewable Energy Training and many more.

Through his interest in education, innovation and skills acquisition programmes, Barrister Ashamu shapes a future where poverty becomes a diminishing concern rather than a persistent or recurrent challenge.

As a compassionate public servant and dynamic youthful leader, Barrister Ashamu exemplifies the combined nature of professional excellence, exceptional leadership and a philanthropic gesture with a heart dedicated to lifting people from the shackles of hopelessness, deprivation and despair, setting a path towards a more equitable and prosperous society.
