A bridge in Ijeja, Abeokuta, Ogun State on Tuesday  night  collapsed after a heavy downpour.

Our correspondent who visited the scene gathered that the heavy downpour last night was responsible for the collapse of the bridge.

The CDA chairman of the community, Mr Babajaide who spoke with our correspondent, Olajide Osoba disclosed that bridge collapsed in the midnight after the heavy downpour.

He noted that the bridge had not been in good condition and they have been carrying out palliatives work on it before it finally collapsed yesterday due to  heavy downpour.

Mr Babajide appealed to the state government and local government to quickly intervene in repairing the bridge, saying that the present condition of the bridge is nothing to write home about.

Mr Babajide added that the  bridge has become dilapidated due to years of neglect.

He called on the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun as a matter of urgency to come to their aid in finding lasting solution to the bridge and the bad road in  the community, saying that residents of the community are in difficult times.

"Honestly, it’s quite disheartening to see this,  this morning. No motorists, commuters can pass through here anymore because of the condition of this bridge, I want to say it here that this bridge has become dilapidated for years and no one has come to repair it, many houses have been abandoned due to this bridge, this bridge has caused a lot of damages and now it has collapsed again. We really seek the support of our dear Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun to come to help us at this critical time, as you can see this is very bad, no ease movement anymore, this bridge collapsed last night due to the heavy downpour and before today we have been facing a lot of challenges as regards to this bridge, what we do is we carry out palliatives work on the road but this current one is beyond our power, we need government's support"He concluded

Some commuters who spoke to our correspondent  also appealed for quick intervention of  the member  representing the state constituency and the ministry of works in the interest of the people and sustainable business activities.

They lamented that the damage was beyond the community’s capabilities.

The residents  therefore said the situation was worrisome, as motorists and road users could not use the road for now.
