At Historic Coronation, Olubadan Seeks Ibadan State Before 2027”

Ibadan, the cultural capital of Yorubaland, was thrown into rapturous applause on Friday as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, in his acceptance speech, made a historic call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to create Ibadan State before 2027.

The monarch, speaking with the full weight of Ibadan indigenes behind him, declared that the request was not personal but the long-standing demand of his people, a plea that drew thunderous cheers from sons and daughters of Ibadan, including the sitting Governor of Oyo State who was present at the ceremony.

In his response, President Tinubu acknowledged the deep bond of friendship and camaraderie between himself and the new Olubadan, tracing their journey back to their Senate years, the June 12 democracy struggles, and the impeachment saga that once threatened Ladoja’s political career. He commended Ibadan for the warmth of its reception, noting the overflowing joy and excitement of the people.

The President further shared words of hope, assuring Nigerians that the economy is on the path of recovery, likening the hardship to the painful but necessary process of a healing surgery. He concluded with prayers for longevity on the throne of Oba Ladoja and reaffirmed his faith in the unity of Nigeria, declaring: “Long live Oyo State, long live Nigeria, long live the Olubadan of Ibadanland.”

The ceremony also witnessed the presence of former governors, political bigwigs, and traditional rulers, underscoring the significance of what many have described as one of the most historic coronations in modern Ibadan history.
